Caitlin Bernard Performed an Abortion on a 10-year-old Rape Victim
<p>Three days after the US Supreme Court issued its historic decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Dr. Caitlin Bernard, a highly <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jul/10/indiana-abortion-doctor-10-year-old-child-rape" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">respected</a> Indianapolis obstetrician-gynecologist, took a call from a colleague in Ohio to ask for her help.</p>
<p>The physician, who specialized in child abuse cases, had just examined a rape victim, a 10-year-old girl who was six weeks and three days pregnant. Just hours after Roe was overturned, Ohio had outlawed abortion for any reason after six weeks.</p>
<p>Luckily, abortion was still legal in Indiana. <p>Outraged and hurt on behalf of her young patient, Dr. Bernard <a href="https://www.indystar.com/story/news/health/2022/07/01/indiana-abortion-law-roe-v-wade-overturned-travel/7779936001/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">gave an account</a> of the abortion to the Indianapolis Star, carefully concealing the girl’s identity to illustrate the brutality of abortion bans.</p>
<p>She offered a stark illustration of the new order the Dobbs ruling had ushered in. She aimed to highlight the abortion-based sexist cruelty that continues to grip many US states and does not grant mercy even to the most vulnerable.</p>
