Why is Buenos Aires Caf??s Day celebrated?

The date was chosen because on a day like today, but in 1894, the second entrance of the iconic and legendary Café Tortoni was inaugurated on Avenida de Mayo 825.

It was founded in 1858 by a French immigrant surnamed Touan, who named it in honor of another famous Cafe Tortoni in Paris.

At their tables, great figures such as Jorge Luis Borges, Federico García Lorca, Arthur Rubinstein, Benito Quinquela Martín, Albert Einstein, José Ortega y Gasset, Carlos Gardel and Julio Cortázar have sat.
