How do we build newsrooms where journalists of color want to stay?

<p>Journalism has a diversity and retention problem. The U.S. news business is&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/11/02/newsroom-employees-are-less-diverse-than-u-s-workers-overall/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">less diverse</a>&nbsp;than the overall workforce. Even as&nbsp;<a href="https://digiday.com/media/digidays-updated-breakdown-of-11-publishers-diversity-statistics/amp/?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=digidaydis&amp;utm_source=daily&amp;utm_content=221107" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">some newsrooms show gains</a>&nbsp;in the numbers of journalists of color they employ,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/journalism/2022/06/14/journalists-give-industry-mixed-reviews-on-newsroom-diversity-lowest-marks-in-racial-and-ethnic-diversity/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">journalism has a long way to go</a>&nbsp;in the areas of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). Often, the newsrooms that do better at recruiting journalists from the global majority still struggle to create a culture that retains and promotes those same journalists.</p> <p><img alt="Photo shows a radio microphone in the foreground with a sign over it that reads “ON THE AIR.” The background has blurred a tree." src="https://miro.medium.com/v2/resize:fit:700/1*12ua0H60pIzhHV0SxglF0Q.jpeg" style="height:467px; width:700px" /></p> <p><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/37996646802@N01/5560050395" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">&ldquo;Radio Free Strawberry</a>&rdquo; by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/37996646802@N01" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">cogdogblog</a>&nbsp;is licensed under&nbsp;<a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/?ref=openverse" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">CC BY 2.0</a></p> <p>Of course, you can and should read the research on these issues. Like other journalists of color, I&rsquo;ve both read the numbers and experienced their consequences first-hand over a decade working in public media newsrooms across the country, as a mentor, and later as I supported newsrooms with the Solutions Journalism Network.</p> <p><a href="https://jskfellows.stanford.edu/how-do-we-build-newsrooms-where-journalists-of-color-want-to-stay-e977f12135fe"><strong>Website</strong></a></p>
