This article will investigate the 2020 partial destruction of protected site Monument Hill in Arizona USA as a part of a government sanctioned construction of a border wall with Mexico. In doing so it will delve into the history of the natural, intangible and tangible heritage related to Monument Hill, as well as the actors involved in the support, prevention and mitigation of its destruction, ultimately making the claim that the demolition of indigenous heritage for the purpose of border creation is a reinforcement of colonial oppression, reflects a separatist US political climate and undermines the concept of “universal value” propagated by heritage organizations.
