Book Bans in Florida
<p>On Wednesday, May 24, 2023, <em>The Miami Herald</em> <a href="https://omiami.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b7bd33d0860ecb05667317f15&id=529ab8f7fc&e=1990b5c523" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank"><strong>reported that Bob Graham K-8 in Miami Lakes restricted access </strong></a>to one poem and three books after a parent made a formal complaint. The poem in question is Amanda Gorman’s “The Hill We Climb,” which was read at President Biden’s inauguration. One of the books is <em>The ABCs of Black History, </em>a children’s book by Rio Cortez.</p>
<p>O, Miami <a href="https://omiami.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b7bd33d0860ecb05667317f15&id=3c01294c12&e=1990b5c523" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank"><strong>published Rio’s first chapbook</strong></a> in 2016.</p>
<p>At O, Miami, we believe book censorship is a dangerous trend whose historical practice targets minority groups and preludes greater violence. It must always be taken seriously.</p>
