<p>We take police on our streets for granted today. But they weren’t always there.</p>
<p>At one time, we had watchmen in London rather than police officers.</p>
<p>Did you know, the job of keeping order on the streets of London was once the <a href="http://www.open.ac.uk/Arts/history-from-police-archives/Met6Kt/MetHistory/mhFormMetPol.html" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">responsibility of parishes</a>?</p>
<p>It was a somewhat disorganised approach to dealing with criminals.</p>
<p>Rich parishes could afford more watchmen than poor parishes. So that inevitably meant that where you lived made a difference as to how safe the streets were.</p>
<p>To be honest, you could say that’s true of today — only for different reasons.</p>
