Benin, a modest but important country in West Africa known for its vibrant agricultural sector, has embarked on a transformative journey to improve its local processing capabilities, particularly in the cashew sector. The country, fondly referred to as the “cashew capital of the world”, is poised to transform its economic situation with a strategic embargo on the export of raw cashew nuts from April 2024. This forward-looking policy aims to bring about a paradigm shift in the cashew value chain and create an environment in which farmers’ incomes are strengthened and the value of the nuts is increased through local processing.
