A Billion Beat Review

Billion Beat was released for PC in 2021 by developer Dronami. Or at least Steam says 2021. Their website says 2020.

It doesn’t matter. Look at that picture up there. You have a big-face ugly alien who’s gonna punch you out!! I thought so. I felt those vibes when I saw the screenshots and trailer. I failed to read the store page description on steam that describes a boss alien ejaculating on you. Billion Beat is weird.

Its weirdness is mostly inconsequential except to make everything ugly. I was in it for the gameplay and it did disappoint. Big time. Punch-out!! works on visual and audio cues that provide just enough time to react and pull off a combo. Billion Beat attempts to do the same, but it feels imprecise and therefore not much fun. Further, matches are unbalanced with the first several matches providing little difficulty and later matches being absurd. There’s a levelling system so I imagine the difficulty curve is built around some amount of grinding for experience. This also means facing earlier opponents again is pointless aside from gaining experience. Yes you’ll get a better time which you might care about, but it‘s because you levelled up, not because you got better.
