Lawrence Avenue East

Lawrence Avenue is a major street running through Toronto, but I think of it as the river of my youth. Though I have lived in Scarborough, one of the city’s five districts, less than four years in total, it might as well be a lifetime. If not my formative years, they were certainly the impressionable ones, and Lawrence Avenue is their central through-line.

And central it is. Finch and Steeles may be the district’s border, after which the land falls away into Hudson Bay, while St. Clair and Danforth are so far south that they are practically pathways to the Bluffs, where the pitbull teeth of the cliffs peak at 300 feet over Lake Ontario. No, Lawrence Avenue is the middle of Scarborough and it has everything an immigrant could ever need.

Website
