Avian Auguries

The Conference of The Birds by the Sufi poet Attar of Nishapur is an Arabic classic well known to lovers of world literature, which holds many passages of great significance. This allegorical poem portrays a sort of summit between several different species of bird. Of course their discourse is of a transcendental nature, but it essentially involves a quest to find a fabled bird known as the Simorgh, through seven symbolic valleys.

Perhaps not surprisingly, Obsidian Eagle has always been into the lost art of Roman bird augury too. This would involve reading omens (auspices) from the observed interactions of different birds. Furthermore, Yours Truly also looks up to the night sky for those constellations that resemble Aves. Hence, today’s cryptic poetic piece is about these various matters, interwoven as it were, into a singular theme. Without a doubt, such verses should certainly serve to please any avid birdwatcher or birder!
