Indeed, political, religious, cultural, commercial and social events all took place in the agora. This essay will focus on the religious and civic functions of the Athenian agora, and how its buildings, planning and wider urban setting accommodated these functions. In order to address this, the essay will outline the urban setting and planning that allowed the Athenian Agora to truly develop into a civic and religious centre, followed by an analysis of the buildings that carried out civic functions, and lastly, the ones that carried out sacred functions.</p>
