From America to Austria

There are a lot of Americans in Austria, from the Brazilians I’ve met in craft bars to the Californians teaching ESL in classrooms. There’s a network of international teachers, spouses, fintech bros. You just have to find it.

When I made the big move from the U.S.A. to Austria, on my own eight years ago, I felt like I was the only American, and subsequently, the loudest person in Vienna.

Over the years, my friends and I have discussed cultural differences at length — particularly between the U.S.A. and Austria (as we know it from our experiences in Vienna, it’s capital city — so, obviously, these are generalisations). One particular difference is the sound barrier versus the physical barrier.
