We Are A Splendid Amalgamated Race

<p>I spent the formative years of my life believing that I was just “white”. English, Irish maybe speckled with some other “white” European flavor, but generally generically “white”. When I was 16, under much duress, my mother shared with me that my father was not who I believed him to be. I did not understand her words at first, but when she said, “Jose Flores”, my world tilted. The greasy burger in my hand lost all its weight and the red glow of the neon Budweiser sign in that “Anywhere in America Diner” seemed to envelop me.</p>
