All of a Sudden, Software People are Worried About the Dangers of Automation. Go Figure.

Last week, I had the pleasure of representing Futurice on a panel talking about “The Future of Work” in the context of a Finnish business event.

I’ve been working in software for 20 years, in all kinds of different contexts — start up, corporate, and consulting. I’ve been working since I was 15 years old, so I have also worked in a lot of non-tech contexts, from farm work to bingo parlors, to bagel shops. When I think about the future of work as an umbrella topic, I don’t only think about us in tech, and our industry.

In the software industry, we’re used to everything changing all the time. The idea that we have to constantly learn and evolve is so deeply embedded in our culture, that I think younger colleagues can even be frustrated if they DON’T change their career profile two or three times by the time they’re 30.
