<p><em>The GenAI team develops small language models. They mimic the quality of LLMs such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 — which powers ChatGPT and Microsoft’s AI Copilots — while using far less computing power. GenAI is separate from another Microsoft team, Turing, which has developed large AI models to improve Bing and other Microsoft products, said the person with knowledge of the situation. (The Turing team is overseen by Corporate Vice President Saurabh Tiwary, who has been part of Chief Technology Officer Kevin Scott’s group.) Microsoft also is diversifying from OpenAI by making AI from rival developers Meta Platforms, Cohere and Mistral AI easily accessible to Azure cloud customers.</em></p>
