Why Latino Representation Often Leaves Afro-Latinos Out in The Cold
<p>Those in the Afro-Latino community are often shunned and doubly marginalized in the broader Latino community because of colorism, a preference for light-skinned, and prejudice against dark-skinned people. While it's fair to say the entire Latino community experiences racial discrimination in America and throughout the global community, it's also true that Latinos with African ancestry are often left out in the cold when discussions about representations arise. It's often said that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," but perhaps that is the problem here. As long as White, and within the Latino community, light-skinned people receive more opportunities and access to power, they will subsequently be the ones judging whose beautiful, talented, and ultimately, who deserves acknowledgment.</p>
