Academic Anarchy: My PhD Dropout Story

I’m an instructional designer as well as a researcher, writer, and educator, which means that I’m skilled at constructing stories — verbal and visual — with information so that a learner or reader can take in and retain the most relevant pieces with the least cognitive load. Formatting, for me, isn’t superfluous. It’s key to good information architecture. Good instructional design is the difference between a reader skimming over the most important information, and having it burned into their brain for the next month.

But no, I was told. Don’t make it good, make it standard. Don’t stand out. Play by the rules. Cite the right people, in the right order.
