Academic Anarchy: My PhD Dropout Story

<p>I&rsquo;m an instructional designer as well as a researcher, writer, and educator, which means that I&rsquo;m skilled at constructing stories &mdash; verbal and visual &mdash; with information so that a learner or reader can take in and retain the most relevant pieces with the least cognitive load. Formatting, for me, isn&rsquo;t superfluous. It&rsquo;s key to good information architecture. Good instructional design is the difference between a reader skimming over the most important information, and having it burned into their brain for the next month.</p> <p>But no, I was told. Don&rsquo;t make it good, make it&nbsp;<em>standard.&nbsp;</em>Don&rsquo;t stand out. Play by the rules.
